Expansion Joint

Movement control joints are small joints designed to be installed between finishes to absorb localised stresses. Such stresses can arise from drying shrinkage, thermal gradients, change in substrate depths and localised loading conditions and normally do not exceed +/- 1mm of movement. Within this catalogue available movement control joints are shown under the Ti-Lock brand name.
Expansion joints are designed to accommodate the large movements generated by a structure as a whole, including settlement and sometimes, seismic deflections. These joints are normally evidenced by physical breaks in the structure where a gap is left in the continu ity of construction to allow movement to occur. Expansion joints are designed to accommodate large movements up to +/- 600mm. Within this catalogue av ailable Expansion Joints are shown under the React brand name.
Movement control joints are normally installed to form flooring modules into discrete bays, each of which is isolated from its adjoining bay by the intervening movement control joint. This creates 'continents' of finishes that are able to move without affecting abutting bays
Joint Transitions
Success in coordinating expansion joint systems is evidenced by the elegance and uniformity of finish and the ease by which transitions are formed; particularly where they penetrate floors, walls and ceilings. Shown below are a series of typical joint junctions, which display the versatility of Vexcolt’s products. Transitions may be factory made or alternatively, formed on site.

Customer Support
Vexcolt expansion joint systems (EJS) are designed to coordinate with the widest range of finishes and to accommodate the most demanding of environments. Systems are available for use with hard tile, carpet, vinyl, drywall, plaster and coated finishes as well as asphalt and concrete. Systems in brass and stainless steel are available for decorative or heavy-duty applications. Abrasion or chemical resistant systems can be supplied upon request.
Exterior Seals & Heavy Duty Expansion Joints
Exterior seals are normally used in external environments where both movement and weatherproofing are major considerations. Typically such exterior seals are used in expansion gaps up to 100mm wide and are installed in floors/decks, walls and roof applications. Some joints in these ranges are epoxy bonded into place whilst others seals are compressed and squeezed into position in the structural gap. Most of the seals included are suitable for both pedestrian and vehicular loading.

Fire Barriers
Expansion joint gaps are physical breaks in the continuity of construction and generally extend (as a gap) through floors, walls, ceilings and roofs. As such they often compromise fire compartment zones and in the event of fire act as chimneys for the passage of toxic smoke and flame. Hence, some form of fire stopping is required. The type of fire barrier required within expansion gaps is a system that not only inhibits the passage of flame and smoke but also one that moves in response to structural movement. The Reactofire range of fire barriers are designed to com plement the React range of expansion joints providing fire protection and accommodating movement.

Technical Training Manual
Expansion Joints - also known as Structural Movement Joints
Expansion joints are physical gaps formed bitween sections of a large-scale building. These can range from a few millimetres wide to metres wide in some seismic locations. Effectively they divide a large scale building into smaller sub-buildings and these move independently of each other to accommodate deflections arising from:
- Structural settlement
- Planned structural deformation due to loading
- Drying shrinkage of structural components
- Ambient thermal gain and loss
- Wind loading
- Seismic events
Vexcolt expansion joints are designed and manufactured in accordance to DIN 1055/ Din 1072 standards and comply with the requirements of ASTM - E1399-97. Vexcolt is a BSI registered firm of assessed capability under ISO 9002 - certificate number FM 24391.
